mindful: focusing ones awareness on the present moment

insomnia

it’s sharp.
1:00 a.m.
the ceiling of my room is deep blue,
and if you ever ask,
i am sinking below.
tik
tok
my clock battery
never dies
never fails to bother me.

it’s 2:00 a.m.
the ceiling of my room is deep blue.
i rose from the bed,
opened the window
to a new gallery
of a rainy december.
never romantic, though!
i am deadly worried
about the two kittens below.

it’s 3:00 a.m.
the ceiling of my room is still blue,
and if you ever ask,
my mind is internally screaming below,
begging the cosmos
to have some mercy on me.

it’s 4:00 a.m.
the ceiling of my room
is turning a lighter shade of blue,
and i am thinking
of the dark circles i’m going to conceal in the morning,
the smiley masks i’m going to wear,
the toxic people i’m going to deal with
i’m thinking of...
thinking of...
the...

it’s 6:00 a.m. now.
the ceiling of my room is light blue,
decorated with twelve yellow butterflies,
and i am grateful i slept
for a hundred and twenty minutes or so.
